I’m a water drinker… besides unsweetened ice tea it is the only thing I drink. So, I probably go through about 50 bottles of water a week – the 16.9 ounce ones. I have tried a filter and my water still tastes like absolute crap so I have no other choice other than buy gallons. But let’s face it, you can’t take those with you in the car, so I have one large 2 1/2 gallon jug for when I’m home and tons of bottles for at night and to go out with.
I’m just starting to recycle these bottles (I know, I know, don’t lecture because I haven’t done this yet… I’ve chastised myself enough) But today I was reading Shape Magazine and I saw a little tidbit about the caps on these bottles of waters and soda caps and stuff. I didn’t know that they end up not being recycled and sometimes end up in the oceans, rivers, and in the mouths of baby seals who eat them. So, basically Aveda (which is a store I love but can’t afford!) is now collecting these caps to recycles them for their own shampoo bottles and stuff. It’s pretty cool actually they have collected a ton so far.
So anyhow, as a tribute to my environment, I’m telling you all about this so that you can help as well! Also, if you bring in at least 25 caps from bottles of water, laundry detergent, facial cleanser, shampoo and other products, you can get a free sample from their hair or body care lines. I’m sure its small but it is still cool.
So, here’s the link to check it out yourself and find stores near you to drop them off.

This is fantastic to know. My next question is this- where do you find around here to actually recycle? I’ve had a heck of a time finding a place.
What a great idea Erin, thanks for sharing it. We have an Aveda spa down the street from us so I’m going to see if they’re taking the caps… it’s been bothering me A LOT lately about how wasteful we are with plastic bottles, even though we recycle. So much so that we’ve decided we’re not buying plastic bottles anymore – we’re buying the large bottles only for our water cooler and then we’re buying these…http://www.sigg.ch/ to refil – no more bottles for us.
Oh so cool! Thanks for letting us know! When I used to be able to afford spa days, it was always to our local Aveda spa. Whatever they use for their facials is heavenly!
I’ve always thrown away the caps to the water bottles before putting the bottles in the recycle bin and they do add up (I’m like you with water bottles).
Very cool to know I can bring them to the salon for free goodies!
