Around 2:30pm my son came to me and said that his legs were itchy. I looked and at first it looked like a little bug bite… and then there were 2 and 3 and suddenly within seconds his whole body seemed like one big red welt. Turns out he had hives. So after freaking out (I am so NOT good under pressure) I called a few friends – none of which answered the phone – but thankfully my friend Meredith called me back who has a husband who is a pharmacist. I wasn’t sure how much Benadryl I could give him. Craig told me everything I needed to know and within about an hours, some of the hives started to go away, but at the same time, others were forming. Another dose of Benadryl about an hour later… still more hives. I started to get nervous but all the medical websites said that hives weren’t serious so I let it go… until the hives hit his face. His face swelled up to about twice the normal size and I said “That’s it!” and I headed over to the urgent care.
It ended up being that he had Strep throat that was never treated becasue I didn’t know he had it – he had absolutely no symptoms at all! He had to get an epinephrine shot and then a shot of steroids. All was well, or so I thought. The doctor told me it wouldn’t last but hoped it would till morning till I could fill the prescrption for the antibiotics to help with the strep throat. Not so much, I just checked on him before bed and his face is swollen again and the hives are literally covering his body from head to toe – much worse than before. So, I just woke him up to give him more Benadryl and we’ll see what happens. There is NO way I’m going to sleep. I keep wondering if it is affecting his breathing so I am going in there every half an hour till Walmart pharmacy opens at 10am. That’s a freaking long time a way and I’m worried out of my mind. But everything I keep reading is that it is rare for them to stop breathing but you just never know, you know?
I took pictures when he had the first hives because I was using them to see which ones were new and which ones were old. Poor thing – this is what he looked like :(
If you think that is bad you should see him now… they are SO much worse, and like I said, I’m freaking out. I hate when my little guy is sick :( Okay, 30 minutes are up – going to go check on my little buddy! I’ll update tomorrow after we know everything is a-okay.

That is terrible… poor little guy. I’ve heard of that happening though with strep. How is he feeling?
Poor little guy :( If they didn’t tell you the steroids can cause moodiness, red faces, heartburn, increase appetite and water retention. All minor stuff when compared to the hives :(
Don’t feel bad about not knowing he had strep, my son had a double ear infection in one ear and a triple in the other and I didn’t get a complaint out of him until the ear drum was close to bursting ( it didn’t)
