I’m not sure if I told you all about my flea problem… more specifically my cats flea problem. First of all, lest you think I’m a horrible cat owner, I’m going to preface this by saying that my cat is fully indoors and she was on Frontline Plus.
Okay, now that that is out of the way, here goes. About three weeks ago I started to get freaking really itchy. It was right after getting back from Colorado and I was dying, literally. I was showering a few times a day just to stop being itchy and since it mainly happened when I was lying in bed, I assumed that I had the dreaded bed bugs. You laugh, but those things aren’t just real, they are impossible to get rid of. I had researched them over and over again and I swore I had them. I even went so far to call for a free home inspection for bed bugs.
Just as I was hanging up the phone I look over at my cat in the window and notice black flecks on her fur. I immediately wonder what she may have rolled in and go to wipe them off. Thousands more showed up. I freaked out, and grabbed her and looked under her fur. Thousands and thousands of more black flecks were in her fur. Yep, you guessed it… flea poop… How freaking gross right?
I didn’t actually know what it was at first so I went to my trusty Google, and found out quickly that my cat was infested with fleas. But yet, I had not seen one! Not even one! So, I go to the vet, buy some new flea control called Vectra since apparently, Frontline wasn’t working. I rush out and get the cat shampoo, the flea spray for the rugs, etc… I came home and immediately threw my cat in the sink to give her a bath. This is a cat who hasn’t had a bath in 9 years for one reason. She’s a screamer… not a few meow’s – a downright screamer. She bites and claws and makes me freaking miserable. But I got through it and even managed to hold her down to hairdry her so I can put the Vectra on. I sprayed the rug the next day and have been vacuuming like a fool. This past Saturday I even steam cleaned the rugs.
I took a nap this morning and STILL felt freaking itchy. I have vacuumed no less than 10 times since last week and I’m completely unsure of what to do next. I’m desperate here – I have never had an infestation of fleas, I have done everything they asked, but I need more help. Have any of you had flea issues and found a surefire way to get rid of them? How long does it usually take? I’m dying here!!

Have you tried bombing your house?
When we got our cats they had fleas. Took us a while to get rid of them too. We ended up using Advantage (drops that you apply to cat, obtained from the vet, may be similar to what you used) Our vet said flea shampoo does no good because as soon as the cat dries off, the fleas come back. The Advantage kills the fleas when they bite the cat.
We also used a spray called Premise 2000 on the carpets and furniture which is supposed to kill fleas as they hatch for several months. And I read somewhere that putting out rock salt would suck moisture out of the surrounding area and dry up flea eggs so they wouldn’t hatch. I didn’t have rock salt, but I put a foil pie plate of salt under our bed because it was a cheap solution and I figured it wouldn’t hurt.
Can’t tell you which one of those did the trick, maybe it was a combination, but the flea problem went away and the cats have never had fleas again. Thank goodness!

Though…If she’s an indoor cat, I wonder where she got the fleas? We haven’t had to use any kind of flea control on our cats once we got rid of the initial infestation. Might be worth trying to figure out where the fleas came from in the first place?

You might have to do a flea bomb or two in the house. Just because they aren’t on the cat, doesn’t mean anything. They can still be in your carpet and what not.
They can get everywhere :( Your gonna need to bomb the house, possibly retreat the cat, wash your bedding – area rugs- ( hows your son? They acn hide itht e stuffed animals), and do the carpets.
It takes time :(

ugh. fleas suck! you have to use a fogger bomb for real, bathe the cat the same time. its the only way. they dont die even in water their gross. Then, check your cats butt, cus if it has fleas that bad it prob has tapeworm, itll look like rice. Then, its a vicious cycle, they ingest fleas, get worms, the worm segments have thousands of flea eggs inside them.
you can get pills at dr fosters and smith to treat them and save on a vet bill. you can get 3 pills or 50 pills lol its like 13 or 90 bucks. so the 3 works.
Good luck with that. I feel for you, its happened to us all i think….?

Hey I am just here for moral support because I have no clue as I don’t own any pets. Thanks for reminding me one of the many reasons why I am not a pet owner. Sorry! :(
Scratch, scratch, scratch that itch.
I have to say the bombing has been the most successful for me in the past with my dogs….Good luck because it can be miserable
